My voyage started back in 2008, whilst I was in Thailand. The Ho Chi Minh Trail was always fascinating to me. When I was told that most of it ran through Laos, I knew I had to go to this mysterious land to discover the Ho Chi Minh trail. I went back to the UK and started my research, what a story. Finally on Christmas 2009, I departed to take on the trail. I arrived in Laos, picked up a bike and headed for my Hotel, It would be an eventful night one that left me thinking where am I?. I would return to Laos for 6 months every year, until 2016 when someone gave me job, eventually I would start Lao Adv Tours proper in 2017. Fast forward today and we’re getting stronger every year.
In 2012 I first came across Virginia’s work. Her publication A History of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, The Road to Freedom became my travel companion. About halfway through reading, I realized that her and her husband had walked the trail in the late 1990’s. Now, that is some feat. There can be no doubt that there is no better person than Virginia for a historical adventure tour along the trail. To this day we speak frequently, we both have many contacts, which helps when we’re trying to locate places on the trail.
My journey with Chris started on social media. He reached out with a few questions about my book on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. I replied by return and am pleased that I did because he has achieved great things in Laos! Most notably, he is now an experienced tour operator, making 100’s of tours over the years.
The interest I have in the Vietnam War covers decades. I first went to Asia in 1991 and Vietnam three years later. In the late 1990s, I lived in Laos for two years where I walked the Ho Chi Minh Trail. In Vietnam and American, I interviewed many veterans of the conflict. One of the highlights of my time was being presented with a campaign medal from the Truong Son Army, one of the biggest sections of the Vietnamese People’s Army, as a sign of friendship between Britain and Vietnam, by the former commander of the trail Lieutenant General Dong Si Nguyen.
Today I am an author, explorer, and academic researcher specialising in military and political subjects. After working for years with the Ho Chi Minh Trail, I enjoy traveling with Chris and fellow trail enthusiasts to expose how Ho Chi Minh won Vietnam and changed world events.
